A installation in the dept of internet subconscious

The project is an homage to the infinity of feels somehow manifested through the poorly made, simple lines of a meme reaction character named Wojak.

The 2x3 meter collage could never exist if so many anonymous users hadn’t dedicated themselves to drawing and archiving these unconscious manifestations.

The Process

The study of meme characters – and their ability to channel a vast spectrum of emotions, social issues, and questions of identity – has been a central theme of our research from the beginning.

With #MEMEPROPAGANDA, we explored the power of these small figures – like Pepe, Wojak, or Gondola – as totemic objects or mascots, capable of projecting a kind of media power, almost magical, onto those who use them.

In this work, of which only a beta version exists so far, the viewer is invited to grapple with the comforting yet uncanny sensation of one’s individuality blending into the online multitude in the depth of a black mirror, questioning the possibility of sharing “feels” through the network.

Black Hole Mirror

(Self-Portrait as Wojak)

The piece is a 2x3-meter installation consisting of a series of wooden panels covered with over 500 cut-out, colored, and black & white prints on paper, alongside a black acrylic glass surface.

The project was originally conceived as a site-specific work for the Black Hole section of the Poetics of Encryption exhibition, curated by Nadim Samman.
